It is a paradox: technical inventions such as dishwashers, smartphone apps or timers are supposed to take work off our hands or at least make it easier. You would think that this would give us more time to relax. But the opposite is the case: Because we have more time, we take on more work and get even more stressed.

Slowing down in everyday life: methods that help reduce stress

With a few simple methods, we can decelerate our lives and reduce stress. We have compiled seven tips that everyone can easily integrate into everyday life.

SAY NO

SAY NO

It sounds simple, but it’s often incredibly difficult: cancel a coffee date with the in-laws if you don’t have the nerve, and don’t commit to looking after a friend’s cat across town if it’s too much for you. If we notice that a deadline or task is stressing us out, we are not obligated to be polite and are allowed to say no in a friendly way.

TAKE A DEEP BREATH

The line at the supermarket checkout, the traffic jam on the way home, the delay of the subway – (short) waiting times stress us enormously, because we are calibrated that everything should happen quickly and we are often in a hurry. The annoyance that arises, however, does not change the situation at all, it only makes it worse. That’s exactly why we should use this time to take a deep breath.

Reduce stress: Deceleration in everyday life. Use the time while waiting for the subway to decelerate.

In such situations, focus on yourself, breathe calmly, feel how you feel, what emotions you feel, keeping in mind that getting upset about the current situation won’t do you any good. You will see: Time will go by faster and you will be more relaxed.

DIGITAL DETOX

GITAL DETOX

The acceleration of our lives is also related to digitalization. Through digital media, we are exposed to a constant flood of information, are constantly available and are constantly under pressure to miss something. This is stressful.

LIVE IN THE MOMENT

We sit at the computer at work – but our thoughts are somewhere in the South Seas, shopping or on Instagram. When you notice that you’re digressing, consciously try to focus on the present. Where are you right now? What are you doing? And how are you feeling? With a little practice, we can decelerate our daily lives by staying where our bodies are in our minds.
